When Sandra Oh announced her departure from Grey’s Anatomy after Season 10, fans were shocked, but it got us thinking: are Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey the next to hand in their scrubs and leave Grey Sloan Memorial for good?

TVLine seems to think that Ellen and Patrick will be back for approximately two-thirds of Grey's Anatomy Season 11, which sounds reasonable, given how both Meredith and Derek will be taking time away from the hospital this season. (Limited screentime for MerDer is better than no MerDer, right?)

Not to mention contract negotiations are currently underway, and with Patrick’s need for speed (Grey’s is just a paycheck for him, remember?) and Ellen’s desire to spend more time with her family, this could lead to a beautiful send-off for MerDer in Season 11. After all, there haven’t been any indications that Ellen and Patrick wouldn’t sign on for an 11th season — the question is for how long?

We’d like to see Meredith and Derek get memorable exit they deserve. However, we’re a little concerned for the fate of the series if MerDer decides to leave the hospital. Sure, the ratings are fine now, but can there really be a Grey’s Anatomy without a Grey? And as much as we love Jackson, he’s no McDreamy, and unfortunately, fans have had a hard time warming up to April. Will Season 10 introduce us to new characters?

We have high hopes for Season 10. We want to see Cristina’s storyline with Owen get resolved before she ships out to a new hospital, and we can’t wait to see how Meredith and Derek adjust to life at home with their two kids. Sure, their departure from the series may be looming, but we think these two will stick around for a bit longer.

After all, there’s no way we can stock up on enough tissues to say goodbye to Cristina, Meredith, and Derek in one season!

Catch the Season 10 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday, September 26, 2013, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
