The episode of Grey's Anatomy that aired tonight, November 14 — Season 10, Episode 9: "Sorry Is the Hardest Word" — had a helluva surprise. And it's a surprise that's either happy news or distressing news for couples everywhere. Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) is pregnant. Or, rather, she was. Back around Season 9. And we're just hearing about it now.

We knew that this episode would have Calzona-centric flashbacks that would reveal a whole new facet of the relationship between these star-crossed wives, but we had no idea that the revelation would be another baby.

We hate to rain on anyone's pregnancy parade, but we're feeling a little betrayed by the writers. This is a classic case of "retroactive contiunity" — "retcon" for short — defined by TV Tropes as the act of "reframing past events to serve a current plot need." In this instance, Arizona is only revealed to have once been pregnant when that plotline was convenient to the narrative.

Callie (Sara Ramirez) was the victim of a retcon before — remember that odd reveal that she slept with Alex (Justin Chambers) at one point?

Sure enough, everything was was reset and the timeline got back on track when Arizona, tragically, lost the baby.

What do you think about this twist? Do you feel like it was unfair, too, or do you think it made for good drama? Let us know your thoughts below.
