We've heard of writers retroactively changing backstory or adding in some important details later, but inserting a whole pregnancy and miscarriage plotline? That might be going a little far, Grey's Anatomy.

On last week's Season 10, Episode 9: "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word" we were taken back in time to before Arizona cheated on Callie, and shown that apparently Callie and Arizona were planning on having another baby. And then Arizona actually did get pregnant, but the baby didn't have a heartbeat. That obviously prompted some of the unhappiness, bitterness, and disappointment that later manifisted in her fling with Lauren.

It was a plotline that certainly helped illuminate Arizona's state of mind going into the affair, but we couldn't help but feel like it was a bit of a writerly cheat. We'd been given absolutely no hint of this plotline last season — indeed, if you ask us, even at their best, Callie and Arizona never seemed to have gotten to a "let's have another baby" point after the plane crash — so we can't help but wonder if it was inserted to make fans who'd turned against Arizona in the wake of the affair more sympathetic to her.

That said, as Calzona shippers, it was nice to see the pair so happy again, even if it was just in a flashback. The actresses certainly sold the heck out of the story, and it will make their potential reconciliation going forward easier to understand.

So, what do you think: Did you like this twist, or did you think it was unearned?
