Think Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes and her producing partner, Betsy Beers, deserve to be recognized for creating such an awesome show that makes us so happy (and occasionally, angry, sad, and emotionally confused) every week? We do too, and it’s not just us — the Directors Guild of America has decided it’s high time they receive a little something shiny for their hard work.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Directors Guild announced that Shonda and Betsy are the 2014 recipients of their Diversity Award to honor them for breaking grounds by hiring so many women and minorities.

“In the decade that Shonda and Betsy have been creating and producing buzzworthy television, their record of diverse hiring has been consistently outstanding at a time when very few television series meet that standard,” DGA president Paris Barclay said.  “As a result, they have impacted the careers of dozens of women and minorities -- they've made stars not only in front of, but behind the camera as well.”

So true — could you imagine what the Grey’s cast would look like without Shonda and Betsy’s keen eye for diversity among actors? Not only are they creating crazy interesting storylines that are often groundbreaking because of the racial lines they cross, but diverse casting also makes it look way more like real life.

"It has always been important that the world created in my shows look like the actual world that we live in," Shonda said. "I am truly honored to be receiving this prestigious award and am thankful for all of the work that the DGA does to promote diversity in our industry."

Congratulations, Shonda and Betsy — not that we’re surprised at all.
