Original story (March 6, 2014): As we all know — much as we may hate to remember — this season of Grey's Anatomy is Sandra Oh's last. But now we know one way in which Shonda & Co. are paying tribute to her character, Cristina Yang.
In case you're not a fan of Gwyneth Paltrow rom-coms, Sliding Doors was a 1998 film that shows the two ways a London woman's love life could go based on whether or not she caught a pivotal train.
We first knew that this installment would explore hypotheticals back in January, when editor David Greenspan tweeted that it'd show a "what-if scenario."
Then, a week later, TVLine reported that the storyline wouldn't be a flash-forward but that "Shonda Rhimes is definitely cooking something up unorthodox." (Fans were disconcerted by the much-older actress cast as MerDer baby Zola.)
Also, remember that birthday party the Grey's peeps filmed for this episode? Now we feel convinced the scene is part of an alternate reality in which Cristina and Owen have a baby. Then again, it could be for a Cristina-Burke baby. Yikes!
The possibilities are endless, Grey's fans.
Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.
Update (March 12, 2014): Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt) tells TV Guide that it's a patient who inspires Cristina's mindquest — and that all of the futures she imagines will loop back to him. "A patient makes Cristina's character [think about] possible scenarios of where they're going to end up because they keep coming back to each other," he teases. Consider us hooked!
