“The entire Central Maine Medical family mourns the passing of Amanda Dempsey,” Central Maine Healthcare CEO Peter Chalke said in an official statement. “Amanda Dempsey was both a great lady and a determined fighter who displayed tremendous courage, class, and grace during her long battle with cancer.”
Six years ago, Patrick and his sisters, Mary and Alicia, founded the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope & Healing in honor of their mother — in order to help families with loved ones finding cancer access information about the disease. Amanda was a fixture at the center, helping out however she could, sewing handmade items for patients, and bringing in homemade jam and other goodies for visitors and staff.
“Amanda’s passing has only made us more resolute in our mission, and we will continue to expand and grow our services and share her legacy with the world,” Dempsey Center Executive Director Wendy Tardif said. “The Dempsey Center’s Healing Garden will be named in Amanda’s honor, and though physically she is no longer with us, we know she will continue to be a source of quiet strength and unwavering perseverance at the Dempsey Center and Dempsey Challenge. Our hearts are heavy, but they are also full as we realize the thousands of lives Amanda touched.”
Grey’s co-star Sara Ramirez (Callie Torres) also reached out to Patrick on Twitter to send her condolences. “My heart goes out to @PatrickDempsey at this time of loss,” Sara said. “Sending you, your family and friends love and strength. #AmandaDempsey.”
It sounds like Amanda was an awesome lady who brought a lot of people happiness despite her own struggle, and we’re so sorry to hear she is no longer with us. Our thoughts are with Patrick and his family at this difficult time.
