If the episode of Grey's Anatomy that aired tonight, April 3 — Season 10, Episode 18: "You Be Illin'" — didn't give you a case of the dry heaves, you have a stronger constitution than we do! We watched as the doctors fell like dominos — taken down one-by-one by the stomach virus going around. And the ones who fell the hardest are the ones who are the most stubborn — like Derek (Patrick Dempsey), Jackson (Jesse Williams), and Leah (Tessa Ferrer).
Luckily, two out of those three have spouses who would do anything for them. Take Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), who awesomely presented Derek's presentation in his lieu, telling his audience that Derek has "has taken suddenly and disgustingly ill."
As for docs who escaped the contagion, we loved seeing Callie (Sara Ramirez) bond with Jo (Camilla Luddington), and bestowing the "Ortho glow." (Bestow, Jo, ortho glow. Sorry, we just had to relish in that rhyme.) Callie is over the moon about it, and Jo finally has an outlet for her rage issues: breaking bones. And, as Callie gently reminds her, she'll need a rage outlet for a long time: "Sweetie, you're dating Alex Karev. You'll always be angry."
Speaking of whom, Alex (Justin Chambers) is being lured away by the prospect of private practice, and we know that Lebackes (Patrick Fabian) will stick around for awhile, so we think that this is the start of a major plot point for him.
Meanwhile, April (Sarah Drew) and Bailey's (Chandra Wilson) bubble boy patient shows that — unlike the Jake Gyllenhaal movie — that type of quarantine is no laughing matter, especially not for a little kid.
All that said, for our tastes, this episode treaded too heavily in the patients-of-the week and not enough on the character development of the docs. We have a lot of relationship drama hanging over our heads, and we're eager to see how it all plays out. With last week's hypothetical-based episode and this week's stomach-bug business, we feel like the season is stalling a bit, as entertaining and fun as these diversions have been.
