Seven years after leaving Grey's Anatomy in a storm of controversy in 2007, Isaiah Washington is back on the scene as Dr. Preston Burke in Season 10, Episode 22 — "We Are Never Getting Back Together" — airing May 1 on ABC at 9 p.m. ET.
When we first heard that title for this installment — the second-to-last of Season 10 — we had a hunch that it was a reference to Burke's reappearance. Now we have proof, thanks to ABC's official synopsis:
"Cristina (Sandra Oh) looks to Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) for advice as she assesses her future at the hospital. Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) work together on a difficult surgery involving conjoined twins. Meanwhile, Jo (Camilla Luddington) is spread too thin when she tries to work on several cases at once, and Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) realizes the truth about Bailey’s bubble boy case."
Cristina and Mer — as each other's "persons" — have always worked out their boy problems together, and Burke's return will be a doozy from them to dissect.
Meanwhile, we're excited to see the Shepherd sibs scrubbing in together. And it sounds like Jo and Stephanie are making themselves useful around the hospital — though Jo might be trying to be too useful. The synopsis makes no mention of their contemporaries Shane (Gaius Charles) and Leah (Tessa Ferrer), which isn't so surprising considering those characters are getting the boot soon.
But let's face it: Those subplots won't be why we tune in on May 1… We're all about the Burke-Cristina encounter!
