ABC is killing us. They clearly want us incapacitated with emotion, sobbing on our bathroom floors. Why else would they release such a sweet, loving, emotional tribute video to the enduring "person"-ship shared between Grey's Anatomy's Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh)?
Cristina and Mer are perhaps the most authentic, admirable, and enviable POTP — ahem, that's "platonic one true pairing" — we've seen on TV this decade. And this montage encapsulates all the highs and lows they've experienced side-by-side — starting with the first time Mer called Cristina her "person."
We see moments both heartbreaking like Meredith's grief in the aftermath of the plane crash and hilarious like when Mer gasps at the sight of Cristina's barren forehead. ("Mama took my eyebrows," Cristina bemoans.)
We see impromptu dance breaks, we see hugs (some consensual, some not), we see wedding dresses being cut, and we see hypothetical crime-plotting. "If I murdered someone, she's the person I'd call to help me drag the corpse across the living room floor," Cristina explains.
Perhaps the most touching moment comes from the Season 5 finale, following Mer's decision to marry Derek despite all the chaos in the hospital that day — and her observation that tragedy often robs people of the chance to express their true feelings to their loved ones.
"I love you, Cristina Yang," she says.
Cristina beams the warmest smile we've ever seen, and then says, "I'm gonna hug you."
Cristina's last episode — May 15's Season 10, Episode 24: "Fear (of the Unknown)" — can't come slowly enough.
