Of all the '80s covers Shonda & Co. featured on Season 10 of Grey's Anatomy, few were more exquisite and heartrending than Sam Smith's take on immortal Whitney Houston hit "How Will I Know?" — which has just hit YouTube.

Whitney's version is upbeat and flashy — the 22-year-old Brit's is slow and delicate, bringing new emotion to Whit's 1985 chart-topper.

The medical drama aired Sam's cover in Season 10, Episode 16 — "We Gotta Get Out of This Place" — the song playing as Cristina (Sandra Oh) helps Owen (Kevin McKidd) type up his online dating profile before realizing that the ideal partner he's describing sounds very familiar:

"Someone who doesn't care to cook… or get out of bed when it's not a work day. Someone who sleeps so soundly and peacefully that I have to check her pulse sometimes. Someone who's suffered and understands suffering… to the point that I don't have to say a word. She just looks at me and sees who I am and how I feel. Accepts it. She doesn't try to change it, doesn't want to change it. That person. There's a billion people out there, but I imagine there's only one her."

How will we know when our hearts are breaking?! Cristina and Owen are the couple that could never be — or, in some ways, the couple that will always be.

The acting chops of two Grey's legends + Sam Smith's crystalline voice = TV magic. Check out the song and the scene in the clips embedded below.

Grey's Anatomy Season 11 airs this fall.
