The Grey's Anatomy Season 10 finale could have been doubly as sad if Kevin McKidd and his on-screen alter-ego, Owen Hunt, had left along with Sandra Oh and hers, Cristina Yang.

But the 40-year-old actor is telling News.com.au why he decided to stay with the show he's called home since Season 5.

As he has said before, Kevin tells the site that he initially contemplated leaving along with Sandra: "I was [thinking], 'Well, maybe I should leave the show … Maybe I should let these characters leave together and let that be their mythology and their final history,' which is a very romantic notion."

But two things brought him back to the fold though. The first: His bank account.

"There's practicalities in your life like [paying] the bills, so I really wrestled with that."

The other was a sit-down with Grey's creator Shonda Rhimes. "She feels very passionate that there is a lot more to look at with Owen Hunt," the Scottish actor explains. "When he becomes detached by necessity from Cristina, there is going to be this whole other layer that we've never ever gotten to know … That got me excited … because if there was nothing else [for Hunt to do], then I should move on."

Indeed, it will be interesting to see a Cristina-less Owen, which is something we've never seen on the show, even when he and Cristina were in splitsville. Yet another reason we're excited for the show to return!

Grey's Anatomy Season 11 airs in September.
