Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes already told us that Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona's (Jessica Capshaw) revelation in the Season 10 finale — i.e. that they could have a second child via surrogate — is likely to be more trouble than they bargained for.

Now, in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Shonda takes Calzona's pulse, and the prognosis is not necessarily good.

"Yes, it is a Band-Aid," the veteran TV producer says of the surrogate idea. "It's going to be revealed very quickly that it is a Band-Aid. How could it not be? I don't know if anybody could watch that and go, 'Oh yeah, that's the answer for them.' How could Arizona say, 'Yes, I could have a baby but I don't want to' and not feel like a Band-Aid for whatever is going on with their relationship?"

But, as Shonda elaborates, this might be the catalyst for huge change in Callie and Arizona's relationship — for better or for worse: "I love the idea that, for them, it's going to open up the opportunity for them to finally explore everything that's wrong and whether or not they should be together at all or whether or not they want to be together at all."

"Their entire relationship, by the way, has been a series of Band-Aids," she observes. "It's heartbreaking and it's beautiful, and… you choose to fix all the Band-Aids that are wrong and be together or you move on. But it's a choice of commitment, and we're going to watch them explore that stuff."
