Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) may have put her foot down about moving to Washington, D.C. with Derek (Patrick Dempsey) during the Season 10 finale of Grey's Anatomy — but don't assume that foot will stay down in Season 11! Grey's mastermind Shonda Rhimes tells The Hollywood Reporter that she and the other writers might have this power couple switch coasts after all.

"What happens next is going to be very interesting," the uber-producer says of Mer and Der's impasse. "Who gets resentful and who feels cheated is also going to be interesting. Does he go or does he stay? What happens if she goes, too? Are we going to have a show in which Meredith and Derek are in Washington and everybody else is here?"

It's not out of the realm of possibility, Shonda says. "We have the sets; we could do it. We've talked about it."

And the character relocation wouldn't be unprecedented — Cristina (Sandra Oh) had a multi-episode arc in Minnesota during Season 9.

The whole issue of ambition vs. devotion was one on which the writers themselves couldn't agree, Shonda reveals, which convinced her that it was right for the show.

"It was very interesting to get to dive into that this season," she continues. "There was a lot of blowback from the guys in the writers' room and that was really fun to fight. It was really interesting to have those arguments. The more we argued, the more I argued, 'That is what the story is; the fact that you're yelling at me and I'm yelling at you is what the story is.'"

Do you think Meredith will stay resolute about staying in Seattle — or will she be swayed? Sound off below!

Grey's Anatomy Season 11 premieres Thursday, September 25, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
