The center of the Grey’s Anatomy relationship universe may exist around Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek’s (Patrick Dempsey) marriage — a love story that has spanned all 10 seasons so far — but any true Grey’s fan knows that isn’t the real love story of the show. That title belongs to Meredith and Cristina (Sandra Oh), the perfect BFF pairing that we were forced to say goodbye to in the Season 10 finale when Cristina left Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital forever.
And in a clip from the “Beautiful Relationship” featurette that’s included in the Season 10 DVDs (thanks to TVLine), creator Shonda Rhimes talks about what it was like to write Cristina off the show and how Meredith ended up playing a big part of that.
“I loved that Meredith was tasked with the job of helping getting her out the door,” Shonda says. “I thought Ellen did a wonderful job in partnering her in those scenes.”
We happen to agree — although the best kind of sendoff for Cristina would’ve been no sendoff at all. But it was the right time for the character to go on a bigger journey, even if it means we have to say goodbye to one of our favorite Grey’s doctors ever.
“It’s a lovely reminder that the show is not about a boy. It’s never been about a boy. It’s always been a love story between Meredith and Cristina,” Shonda adds.
If you want to see the whole thing, check out the Season 10 DVD set, which is out today. Is there a better way to celebrate Grey’s returning in three weeks? We don’t think so.
