On the Grey's Anatomy Season 8 finale (Season 8, Episode 24, "Flight"), most of the plot had to do with the fatal plane crash. But, quietly, something pretty major might have happened back at Seattle Grace as well. And it could mean big changes for Season 9.

We’re talking about Owen’s (Kevin McKidd) sudden and unexpected dismissal of Teddy (Kim Raver), his former Iraq buddy and his Chief of Cardiology. At first glance, it seemed like he was upset about Teddy’s consideration of an offer from Medcom, the US Army’s Medical Command center. She turned it down, but Owen might have thought she took too long to think about it.

But we have an alternate theory as to why Owen fired Teddy. In the previous episode (Season 8, Episode 23: "Migration"), Cristina (Sandra Oh) had effectively ended their marriage by telling him that she was leaving Seattle and headed to the Mayo Clinic. Owen was heartbroken. The love of his life, his wife, was leaving him for good.

Owen felt helpless, unable to convince Cristina to stay for him. But as soon as Teddy mentioned Medcom, he saw one last chance to get his wife back. In the final minutes, he threw a Hail Mary pass by firing Teddy, giving Cristina an irresistible reason to stay in Seattle: Teddy’s job.

Do you think this was Owen’s plan? Tempting Cristina to stay put with a cushy Chief of Cardiology job, and also enabling them to continue working on their fragile marriage almost seems like it could work.

Miss Grey’s? Us too. Luckily the show will return to Thursdays at 9 p.m. with all-new episodes in the fall on ABC.
