Exclusive! Sarah Drew Says Grey's Anatomy Set Is Great for Expecting Moms

Long before they started popping out babies of their own, the original Grey’s Anatomy regulars would escape to the maternity ward and watched the serene, smiling newborns to escape the stresses of their work lives. Now that so many of both the characters’ and the stars are becoming parents in their own rights, the ABC drama is becoming an increasingly family-friendly place.

“I’m the fourth one in a row to be pregnant, so they know how to do it,” Sarah Drew (April Kepner) told Wetpaint Entertainment in an exclusive interview as she cradled her baby bump at the 2011 TCA Summer Tour.

Currently 16 weeks into her first pregnancy, Sarah is very grateful that she doesn’t have to squeeze into high heels, tight dresses, or god forbid, corsets with she goes to work!

“We really live in the hospital so we’re in our scrubs the whole time. I’ve probably worn about five outfits that aren’t scrubs in the past two years on the show,” she told us. “It gets a little old but it’s so comfortable because I’m in baggy clothes and sneakers every day.”

While a virgin birth for straight-laced April Kepner would set a new bar for outlandish Grey’s storylines, Sarah said her pregnancy sadly won’t be written into the show and her bump will be kept well-hidden behind gurneys and hospital beds.

In addition to the ease of hiding her bump, Drew said that her bosses are incredibly understanding of the needs of an expectant mom.

“Shonda (Rhimes) and Betsy (Beers) and the entire crew are all so supportive,” explained the glowing actress. “I had to come to work ten minutes late on recently because I had morning sickness. When I got to set and instead of being mad that I was late they gave me a stool to rest on and said I could lie down.”

“With all those hospital beds around, the comfort level is pretty high!”

Catch the season premiere of Grey’s Anatomy on September 22 on ABC.
