ABC Family's new summer show Bunheads, which premiered on Monday, June 11, has been getting lots of positive buzz. It marks Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino's first return to the quirky-small-town dramedy format that made her famous, and even reunites her with Gilmore Girls standout Kelly Bishop. Good times, right? Not according to Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes.
"Hey @abcfbunheads," Shonda tweeted last night. "Really? You couldn't cast even ONE young dancer of color so I could feel good about my kid watching this show? NOT ONE?"
Shonda, who is outspoken about the importance of diversity on TV, definitely has a point. ABC Family is normally pretty good about diversity of all sorts, so the lack of racial diversity on Bunheads is notable. Then again, maybe that will change in the future.
What do you think: Was Shonda too quick to judge Bunheads after just one episode, or is she right on the money? Sound off in the comments below.
Miss Grey’s? Us too. Luckily the show will return to Thursdays at 9 p.m. with all-new episodes in the fall on ABC.
