These days, it sometimes feels like Grey's Anatomy showrunner Shonda Rhimes has it out for Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Cristina (Sandra Oh). She has set up a heartbreaking situation for the characters, and it's hard to see how the marriage can survive without one of the characters giving up something they want very badly.
However, in a recent interview with TV Guide, Shonda assured fans that she isn't trying to be cruel to the characters or their fans.
"I'm not trying to make Cristina and Owen hit rough patches because not everyone can get a happy ending," she said. They didn't just lose the writer's room lotto.
"It truly isn't about playing with the audience. It really is about this journey for these characters and how to keep it honest."
So, why did Owen and Cristina go from happily married to devastated and close to divorce?
"I try to look at them as people and it feels to me like Cristina still has a lot of unresolved issues," Shonda explained. "And more importantly, she's in love with a person who has some unresolved issues with her as well."
And don't expect that Cristina will give in and decide to have kids after all. While Shonda doesn't say that's out of the question, she does say that "Cristina Yang is an extraordinarily gifted surgeon first before she's anything else...She fully expects and believes that if Owen's going to be in love with her, he's a man who's got to be in love with an extraordinarily gifted surgeon first and deal with all that comes with that."
In the end, Shonda is happy with the plot, in part because Sandra Oh and Kevin McKidd have given it their all. "After eight seasons to have a cast that's not phoning it in, it's the most exciting thing in the world."
As much as this storyline tears us apart, we have to give it to the Grey's team: The acting and writing are knocking Owen and Cristina's story out of the park every week.
