Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes has always spoken up about her fans, and she’s been doing it a lot more lately. Yesterday, she addressed a fan who asked about the prolific gay characters on her shows, and now, she’s speaking to Oprah about “taking back the show” from shippers.

“The fans are so vocal and they’re so serious,” Shonda told Oprah on Oprah’s Next Chapter this weekend. “The MerDers just want to see Meredith [Ellen Pompeo] and Derek [Patrick Dempsey] happy, and the CrOwens want to see Cristina [Sandra Oh] and Owen [Kevin McKidd] happy. And they’re all online and they’re all really vocal, and I suddenly realized we weren’t growing at all.”

Watch Shonda’s surprisingly candid proclamation about taking the focus off the ships in order to grow below!
