Grey's Anatomy Review: Rate Season 8, Episode 11: ''This Magic Moment''

Nervousness abounds at Seattle Grace-Mercy West at the start of this episode, Season 8, Episode 11: “This Magic Moment.” The docs are preparing to separate conjoined twins, two infant girls named Brandi and Andi. They rehearse the procedure one more time, and then start the real deal. It goes as well as could be expected, but one of the twins suffers kidney failure, so they transplant a kidney from one baby the the other. And then everything is fine, fine... with the babies, at least. Callie (Sara Ramirez) is pissed with Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) for being so controlling during the surgery, and Alex (Justin Chambers) is pissed at Richard (James Pickens Jr.) for stealing his role in the operation.

Meanwhile, Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) are desperate to get Zola's first steps videotaped. Meredith also scrubs in on a surgery with Bailey (Chanda Wilson) — apparently, Bailey's enjoying being back with Ben, but needs a buffer because Ben is pressuring her to move in with him. Bailey rants about how she never makes mistakes, and then Meredith points out that Bailey has a surgical sponge stuck to her shoe. Whoops.

Elsewhere in the hospital, Teddy (Kim Raver) keeps paging Cristina (Sandra Oh) again and again so that Cristina can recite the steps of Henry's surgery time after time. She periodically interrupts the recitations to interrogate Cristina on details of the chronology. The questioning gradually grates on April's (Sarah Drew) nerves, and she flips out... but to no effect. Finally Teddy is satisfied and tearfully tells Cristina that she performed admirably.

This magic moment? Which one was that, exactly? Because we thought this episode was a bit, well, blah. We know; we're supposed to be impressed that the surgeons successfully pulled off another epic surgery. We know; babies are cure. We know, Teddy's grieving. But we're just a bit underwhelmed. Eh, we give this episode 3 stars. It would get two-and-a-half, but Zola's pretty darn cute, especially when she waddles.

Remember to tune in to the episode on Thursday, January 19, at 9 pm ET/PT on ABC.
