The Circle of Life is in full rotation on this week's Grey's Anatomy (Season 8, Episode 18: “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”), and not just because a ginormous lion is on the loose. Yep, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) are just happily driving along, talking about French doors or shutters or who-knows-what when a lion crosses their path. Der is amazed, Mer is amazed, Zola is... unfazed. Turns out, the lion belonged to a woman who, along with her boyfriend, got seriously chewed up. The story is that the boyfriend was meeting the lion for the first time and misinterpreted its playfulness, heroically jumping in front of his lady-friend to save her life. So they both got half-eaten, and they both survive thanks to our docs' fast action, but she breaks up with him since he caused her to lose her beloved pet. (Is there such thing as a female d-bag?)
The sight of that lion caused quite a stir in Martin and Emma, an elderly couple en route to an anniversary Alaskan cruise — so much so that Martin had a heart attack. Teddy (Kim Raver) rescues Martin's hears in the OR, but Emma dies alone in the waiting room in the meantime. So Teddy has to break the news to Martin, and it's terribly sad ... like Notebook sad. Plus, Teddy's trying to process Henry's death still, yelling at her therapy group members and chanting affirmations at the mirror.
Tommy, Intern Morgan's preemie baby, needs surgery on his fistula, but Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) suggests that Morgan consider AND, "allowing natural death." Morgan looks to Alex (Justin Chambers) to help her make the decision, but Alex avoids her like the plague since she's getting so dependent on him. Finally he yells at her to make her own decisions, and Morgan urges Arizona to do the surgery.
Speaking of our favorite same-sex couple (by default!), Arizona gets an awkwardly-long hug from some chick, leading Callie (Sara Ramirez) to wonder how many exes Arizona has in the hospital. Turns out, it's an astronomical number. Callie goes all neurotic on Mark (Eric Dane), but he reminds her that he himself is a constant reminder of Callie's own romantic past for Arizona, except in his case, a baby's involved. Touché, Mark.
Mark is mulling over the idea of moving in with Julia, and Lexie (Chyler Leigh) wants Derek to talk him out of it. Derek says no — that's called an "overstep" — but he does let Lexie clip an aneurysm, despite her screw-up last week. Mark, by the way, is looking seriously slim. And what happened to his gray hair? Now it's all some weird sepia shade. He and Lexie share a nice moment in the elevator for a hot second, so maybe there is hope for them yet. And maybe Lexie can undo his dye job.
And now for the storyline you all have been waiting for: yep, Cristina (Sandra Oh) is still mad as hell with Owen (Kevin McKidd). (And rightly so!) Teddy has her slaving away at their stem cell research, so she's practically in exile in the lab, which seems like torture since she's trapped with her thoughts. Indeed, she even wells up with tears at one point. Owen tries to confide in Meredith, but she tells him that if Cristina didn't tell her, it probably means that Cristina doesn't want Mer to hate him because she wants to forgive him. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) overhears the whole thing and tells Owen that he did a terrible thing but that he's not a terrible person. When Owen comes home that night, Cristina looks at him and throws her cereal in his face. And they look like Grape Nuts, too. That's the ultimate revenge.
Will they ever work it out? Is communication even possible? Will Owen retaliate with some other breakfast food? Stay tuned, fellow fans.
