Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes is speaking up about the final four episodes of Season 8, particularly the highly buzzed-about finale (Season 8, Episode 24, "Flight"). In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Shonda touches on various characters’ personal dilemmas, ‘ships, and those death rumors. Here are her most interesting points.
The Rumored Death in the Finale
“The intention of this episode is we're literally saying goodbye to people — and possibly more than one person … there is something final about this,” she says. “As we leave our season, we will have already seen a death, and there will be some lives in jeopardy.”
As for the title of the episode, “Flight,” Shonda says part of it has to do with “our little babies taking their wings and flying. There's a lot of meaning behind the title. There's many, many meanings behind the title.” Though she wouldn’t comment on the possibility of a plane crash, we think it’s safe to say there will be one.
About that death of a beloved character, now Shonda says, “It's a pretty big death. We're not talking [about] some guest star [who] is going to come in and die kind of thing; it's a big death and it's fairly shocking.”
“We have a very clear plan for what is going to happen next season. I already know how next season is going to lay out. Part of that plan doesn't necessarily mean that just because the doctor decides not return to Seattle Grace, it does not necessarily mean the doctor is not going to be on the show anymore,” she says. Which is basically a way of saying that, should MerDer decide to relocate to Boston, that doesn’t mean they won’t stay on the show full-time.
Speaking of Boston, Shonda says, “Things take a fairly surprising turn in that Derek gets excited about Boston. It's near his family; Harvard is going to offer him the world. He begins to see that it is a very real possibility for the two of them.”
But no matter what, we’ll still get to see their dream house. Or at least one room. “You get to see the one room, the great room of the house, it's quite lovely, and it was really nice that they allowed us to build it considering we don't know what's going to happen to it next season. It was important to show that and to show them at this moment in time, when in a weird way, they have everything.”
Shonda says that Calzona shippers need not worry, because there will be tons of Calzona stuff going on in the final two episodes. For example, in Season 8, Episode 23: "Migration," “Callie and Arizona are dealing with Arizona's friend who Callie is operating on, and that's a really beautiful emotional story about that relationship and the way that Callie takes care of Arizona through that.”
Nothing too revealing here, but Shonda brings up the possibility that these two reuniting might not end so happily ever after. “She's realized her feelings for him, and I think we are going to see that come to a head in a way that's beautiful and possibly bittersweet and kind of lovely.”
