We're just a week shy of Grey's Anatomy's return from an unprecedented two-month long winter hiatus (was that really necessary, Shonda?), and we thought you might enjoy a nice refresher while you're polishing off the final dregs of stuffing and cranking out killer leftover ham sandwiches on that panini maker you got for Christmas. So, without further ado, let's check in with our docs at Seattle Grace-Mercy West and see where they're at.
Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo): Meredith and Karev Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) got shipped out in that nasty Seattle rain in Season 8, Episode 9: “Dark Was the Night” to transport a dying premie from a hospital without proper neo-natal facilities. We're pretty sure they like, used a catheter to get said baby IV fluids or something. Anyway, this came hot on the heels of Meredith and Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) learning that the judge refused to hear their case to adopt Baby Zola (due to Meredith's baby-snatching/trial-effing up rampage), so it's not like Mer's in a good place to begin with. Then, while out on the road, the ambulance breaks down and all inside (Mer, Karev, and the little baby) are hit by an SUV. Meredith and Karev are unharmed in the crash but soon realize that the all the passengers from the car that hit them are splayed across the road.
Questions: How will Meredith ever be found with no cell phone and a broken down ambulance on a deserted road? Will the rig explode with all that oxygen inside? Will they just hoof it till they find a car? Oh wait, they can't because the baby will die of hypothermia and, also, it's in an enormous incubator which probably wouldn't fit in most commercial vehicles. Ummm...uh oh.
Derek Sheperd: Derek had to deal with the bad news about Zola, too, but he remains optimistic, while his dear wife loses her shiz. He tries to convince her it's going to be fine, to no avail, and then, while he's mid-surgery, he gets the call from stranded Meredith and Karev. Things seem fine, until the crash, during which, of course, Karev loses his grip on the cell phone and it gets smashed to pieces. So poor Derek has zero idea what's going on, and runs out of the OR to go find his wife.
Questions: Will Zola come through via some bizarre, only-at-Seattle-Grace twist of fate? Will Derek be able to stick it out with Meredith if they do wind up baby-less? Will they try to adopt another child? Derek's McDreamy hair can't take this.
Alex Karev: Karev is in basically the same spot as Meredith, minus the whole possibly losing his adopted child forever thing. Even though Karev tried very nobly to convince the judge to take MerDer's adoption case, he ultimately failed and is just as grouchy-pants as ever.
Questions: Where is Alex's future at Seattle Grace going? Will he play the hero at the crash site and put himself in danger to save Meredith and/or the baby? And, of course, the obligatory question when it comes to Alex Karev: Will Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) ever return?
Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh): Dr. Yang received the distinct honor of having her mentor Teddy Altman’s (Kim Raver) husband Henry (Scott Foley) die on her operating table. Ouch. Serious ouch. To be fair, she had no idea on whom she was operating. Chief Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) made the executive decision (along with Teddy) to keep her in the dark so she wouldn't get nervous and mess up. Of course, that blew up in everyone's faces when Henry bled out on the table and Cristina learned the identity of the man she wasn’t able to save.
Questions: Will Teddy totally rip Cristina a new one? Will Cristina forgive Hunt? Will this haunt her forever as the moment she screwed over her cardio god?
Teddy Altman: Poor Teddy. Fresh off a fight with hubs Henry about his going to medical school, he had to be admitted to the hospital. The repair surgery was a fairly routine one for Dr. Yang to perform, so Teddy didn't manage to see Henry off before he went under because she was wrapping up a surgery herself. Bad move. Henry dies. Yeah, rough, we know. And foolhardy Owen can't bring himself to tell Dr. Altman her husband is dead while she's working on someone else, so he has to lie to her all surgery long to keep her calm.
Questions: How will she take the news when it comes? Teddy was so relentlessly cheery this episode that you know a hard fall is coming. Homegirl's about to break. Down. So how bad will it be? We would stay a minimum of 20 feet away from her if we were Cristina.
Owen Hunt: Since Owen is the Chief and since he sort of orchestrated the tricking Cristina bit, our favorite ginge is feeling mighty guilty. But, he's forced to keep his chin up for Teddy's sake, and keep reassuring her that Henry's fine until she can close up. Oh, plus he has a wife in total breakdown mode because she just lost her mentor's husband. So there's that.
Questions: At what point will he break, and finally confess to Teddy the bad news? Will his face betray him while he's in the surgery with her? Where does he stand with Cristina?
Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams): Jackson was assisting Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) on a surgery to fix a woman's spine and he accidentally left a surgical screw loose before closing her up. When she takes a turn for the worse, his mistake is revealed and it's done some surrious damage. We're talking the wall of her heart is shredded damage. Oopsies.
Questions: Will Jackson take responsibility for the mistake or will he fall back on Callie, who was technically supposed to be supervising? It looks like somebody's getting sued.
Callie Torres: Dr. Torres, taking the back seat on the spinal reconstruction so that Jackson might get in some practice, hangs out in the OR but doesn't hover too closely. Unfortunately, she makes the dire mistake of forgetting to thoroughly check Dr. Avery's work, so some of the responsibility in the botched surgery falls on her shoulders. She feels terrible, but Miranda Bailey (Chanda Wilson) tries to comfort her with the reassurance that these things happen in teaching hospitals.
Questions: Will Callie take the fall as the supervising surgeon for the mistake? Will her patient even survive? Is Jackson in the doghouse with her for life?
Lots of good stuff coming, we're sure, so stay tuned to Grey's Anatomy for its January 5th return.
