Though there haven’t been any hints that Grey’s Anatomy is planning a mass exodus in the Season 9 finale, we’re still worried about our favorite doctors. Historically, creator Shonda Rhimes throws curve balls at us in the breathtaking final seconds of the season ender, and last year, we were unsure if anyone would survive.

This time around, we are cautiously optimistic that no major deaths will happen, but we can’t be certain. The two-part finale (Episode 23: “Readiness Is All” and Episode 24: “Perfect Storm”) feature a superstorm that wipes out the power, and in turn, the NICU. Since Meredith is definitely going into labor and the synopsis for the first part says “one wrong move puts the lives of Meredith and her baby in jeopardy,” all signs point to one or both of their lives hanging in the balance.

Additionally, Bailey will have to head back to the ER “to help a fellow surgeon survive,” and “one of the doctors fights for their life.” Eek. No matter how you spin it, someone will likely almost die, but the question is: who?

If it isn’t Meredith, we have a feeling it could be the interns (who are notoriously disliked and wouldn’t be terribly missed) or one of the main trauma surgeons, aka April Kepner or Chief Owen Hunt. Neither of them have been as directly in danger as some of the main cast (Meredith, Derek, Cristina, Bailey, Arizona, Callie, etc.) who have all had near-death moments throughout the show’s nine seasons.

Honestly, with the way Shonda has been jerking us around with little hints and ever-changing, top-secret storylines, anything can happen. She also recently told TV Guide that “you’re going to be wondering what the heck happens next” in many moments, so no matter how much we try to predict, we will ultimately just have to sit on the edge of our seats with a box of tissues and hope for the best.

Do you think someone will die during the Season 9 finale’s superstorm? Sound off below.
