Expectations were running high for the Grey's Anatomy Season 9 premiere (Season 9, Episode 1: "Going, Going, Gone"). But did it live up to them?

First, there's Mark Sloan (Eric Dane), who we learn is in a coma post-crash. This episode picks up on the day that he is going off of life support, and gives him a grand send off. There are flashbacks, everyone saying goodbye, and many a long lingering shot. We'll miss you, Mark.

Then there's everyone else. Life as we know it at Seattle Grace-Mercy West is in flux. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is mean and PTSDing. Derek (Patrick Dempsey) can't operate. Cristina (Sandra Oh) is at a different hospital (a hospital where they don't want their docs to have egos. Ha. No.). Alex (Justin Chambers) is on his way out (though he changes his mind at the last second). Owen (Kevin McKidd) asks April (Sarah Drew) to come back.

And Arizona (Jessica Capshaw)? Arizona lost her leg — and it sounds like Callie (Sara Ramirez) is the one who cut it off. Whoa.

Overall, we liked this episode, even if it did get a little overly sentimental. 4 stars.
