There was one thing on every Grey's Anatomy fan's mind after the Season 8 finale (Season 8, Episode 24, "Flight"): What happens now that Lexie Grey (Chyler Leigh) is dead? We're sure her tragic demise will impact the entire cast, but we're especially curious how Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) will deal with his loss — assuming he survives!
We'll have to wait until the show comes back to know what Mark will do, but for now, here are our thoughts on how he might deal (or fail to deal) with losing the love of his life.
Break Up With Julia vs. Start a Family With Julia: After realizing he loves Lexie and then losing her, Julia should really be off the table. Mark needs to focus on working through his loss. But we could also see him desperately trying to make it work with Julia, in a misguided attempt to move on from his pain and start a new life. One day, maybe, he'll be up to starting a family, but we can't imagine it will be soon. Hopefully he realizes that.
Lean on His Friends vs. Withdraw: We'll be curious to see how Mark will interact with his friends, especially Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey). We could easily see him needing to lean on them for emotional support, which could turn out to be a problem if they are busy dealing with their own problems. After all, Derek will presumably be preoccupied with helping Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) through her pain, as well as dealing with his own possibly career-ending injury. And poor Callie (Sara Ramirez) will also have Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) to support. Is it possible that Mark will become a burden for his friends?
What about work?: Will Mark go the Teddy (Kim Raver) route and bury his emotions in work, or will he end up slacking off or messing up? And how long until he recovers from his injuries enough to work at all? We could see this going either way.
And Sofia? One plotline we'd love to see is Mark going into super intense daddy mode. After all, he may have lost Lexie, but he still has one other girl he loves: his daughter! We could also see him getting over-protective to the point of paranoia. That would certainly be interesting,
How do you think Mark will deal with his grief? Let us know in the comments.
Miss Grey’s? Us too. Luckily the show will return to Thursdays at 9 p.m. with all-new episodes in the fall on ABC.
