Grey's Anatomy Season 8 ended with everyone's fates up in the air. While many of the docs are facing a life-or-death situation with the plane crash, Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) is merrily set to leave Seattle for Baltimore, trading Seattle Grace-Mercy West for Johns Hopkins Hospital. However, unless Justin Chambers leaves the show — and we haven't heard any rumors of that happening — we suspect Alex will end up sticking around.

But why would he stay? And if he does stay, what will his story look like? We've come up with a few things we'd like to see from Alex.

He stays because of Arizona: We really, really hope Alex ends up sticking around because of Arizona (Jessica Capshaw). If she survives the crash (pleeeease, Shonda?), we assume Arizona will be severely hampered by her injury, at least for a while. We'd like to see Karev chose to stay to a) support that one woman who always believed in him, and b) help keep the peds department going while Arizona recovers. He could potentially end up taking on some intense cases that would normally go to Arizona, which would be good for his career — perhaps as good as going to Johns Hopkins.

His new confidence is important: We also hope, and expect, to see Alex's newfound sense of confidence play a major role in his story next year. From taking on difficult cases to, perhaps, making some changes in his personal life, we want to see a version of Alex that is well aware that he spent the end of Season 8 being wooed by two of the best hospitals in the country. This bad boy is finally growing up, and we hope that continues.

Let's talk romance: Speaking of growing up, we think it's high time Alex has another shot at a lasting relationship. Now that he is starting to come into his own as a person and has the life he's always wanted opening up for him, we hope that he can find someone to share that life with.

More of his humanitarian side: And hey, maybe Alex can find love while also tapping into his humanitarian side, because one of our favorite plotlines with Alex in recent seasons was when he decided to bring the babies over from Africa. Alex has a big heart buried under his gruff exterior, and we hope his new confidence will make him dream big about the ways he can change the world for the better.
