Grey's Anatomy Season 8 ended with everyone's fates up in the air. While many of the docs are facing a life-or-death situation with the plane crash, April Kepner (Sarah Drew) is in a very different kind of uncertain position. After she didn't pass the boards all of her job offers, including her place at Seattle Grace-Mercy West, were rescinded. Now she has to wait another year before she can retake the boards, and it's unclear what she will do in the meantime.

Unless Sarah Drew leaves the show — and we haven't heard any rumors of that happening — the writers will have to find something to do with April in Season 9. But what will it be?

We've come up with a few options that we think could be interesting for the writers to explore. Let us know what you'd like to see from April in the comments below!

She finds another job in Seattle: While we're not convinced that an "April works at a coffee shop" type plotline would be interesting for any extended period of time, April is an intelligent and talented person. It's possible that she could land a good job outside of the medical field —  perhaps utilizing her penchant for organization at a non-profit, or something along those lines. We think it would be interesting to see her excel at and enjoy a different job; then her internal conflict next season could revolve around whether or not she even wants to be a doctor anymore.

She volunteers at Seattle Grace-Mercy West: Hospitals take volunteers to help out sometimes, right? It could be interesting to see April do that as a way of staying connected to the medial world (and it would be an easy way to keep her around on the show, too). She would have to deal with the frustration of knowing and being able to do so much more than she's allowed to in the position of a volunteer, and it would probably create lots of hilarious awkwardness between her and her former peers and mentors. Plus, this would allow her to pull out her mad skillz at some opportune time in the middle of whatever huge disaster Shonda and co. cook up next year.

She gets rehired: This is the most obvious, and probably most likely, route. With Lexie (Chyler Leigh) and Teddy (Kim Raver) gone, and Mark (Eric Dane) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) potentially out of commission for a bit because of injuries, Owen (Kevin McKidd) might decide that trying to replace so many people at once is too much, and rehire April because at least she knows her way around the hospital. Despite being obvious, we still think this plot has a ton of potential. April would find herself in a weird in-between place, where she's suddenly behind her peers and perhaps not afforded as much respect as she feels like she should be.

Miss Grey’s? Us too. Luckily the show will return to Thursdays at 9 p.m. with all-new episodes in the fall on ABC.
