As Grey's Anatomy Season 8 wound down, it looked like Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Owen's (Kevin McKidd) marriage was over for good. Sure, Cristina declared Owen was her "person" in Season 8, Episode 23: "Migration," but she also decided to ditch Seattle to pursue a job offer elsewhere, which seemed to put a pretty definitive nail in the coffin of their relationship.
However, despite their estrangement, we have a feeling these two will end up back together, at least for some period of time. Here are the top three reasons why:
Shonda Rhimes believes in them: Showrunner Shonda Rhimes has said in the past that "I do ultimately think that [Owen and Cristina] belong together." She even mentioned that although it seems like everything came to a close in Season 8, Episode 23, "their journey really does continue." On the other hand, Shonda also had big plans for Slexie, and we all know how that turned out...
Cristina's totally coming back to Seattle: Now that Sandra Oh has re-upped her contract for another two years, we are 99% sure Cristina will stick around Seattle Grace-Mercy West after all. If she did go elsewhere, the distance might be enough to keep Owen and Cristina apart forever, but we don't believe they can work in the same hospital and not fall back into each other's arms.
They seemed to be on the way to forgiveness: In "Migration" Cristina and Owen seemed to make strides towards reconciliation. Despite the hurt they have both felt, they are drawn to each other. We have a feeling they will both need someone to lean on now that Teddy (Kim Raver) is gone, and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is (presumably) dealing with her own issues.
Of course, all of that doesn't fix their fundamental problem, which is that they want different things out of life. So what do you think: Will Owen and Cristina get together again? And if they do, can they make it last? Let us know in the comments below.
