Many of the most beloved Grey's Anatomy characters will be facing uncertain fates in Season 9. But while Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) and Mark’s (Eric Dane) lives hang in the balance in the first two episodes, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) have a more long-term problem to deal with.

As we know, Derek’s hand was critically injured during the plane crash in the Season 8 finale (Season 8, Episode 24, "Flight"). We’ve speculated on how his injury will affect his immediate future, but what about the bigger picture?

“It’s safe to say that he’ll always be a doctor,” Entertainment Weekly reports, “but says [showrunner Shonda] Rhimes, he’ll deal with the question of ‘what kind of doctor are you when you can’t do the thing you’re greatest at any more?’”

Shonda continues, “We’re going to see him head back, but there is that question for him.” Would it be at all satisfying for McDreamy to simply be a department head? His entire identity is wrapped up in his ability to save patients’ lives with his hands. Without one of them, we worry his grumpy side will come out.

As for Meredith, EW reports that “Mere will deal in a way that’s a little surprising.” Hmm ... At this point, would anything Meredith does really surprise us?
