Grey's Anatomy showrunner Shonda Rhimes has spilled some details on Mark’s (Eric Dane) upcoming departure in Season 9, and with Lexie (Chyler Leigh) and Teddy (Kim Raver) gone, the halls of Seattle Grace are really thinning out. But Shonda tells TVGuide that the new characters will more than make up for the losses.

As we know, Camilla Luddington and Gaius Charles have been cast as new doctors in the upcoming season. According to TV Guide, “The arrival of new docs … will facilitate the transition of Meredith [Ellen Pompeo], Cristina [Sandra Oh] et. al. from residents to attendings.”

“One of the things I want to see our attendings do is teach and that’s what we’re seeing,” explains Shonda.

Not only will the new docs provide some much-needed new blood, but they’ll serve as catalysts for our beloved characters’ maturity and the next phase of their careers. Hopefully, the phrase “Those who cannot do, teach” will not apply to Derek (Patrick Dempsey), whose hand suffered possibly career-ending injuries in the plane crash.

Will Derek ever practice again, or is he doomed to a teaching life from now on? Also, does this spoiler suggest that Mer and Cristina are definitely staying in Seattle?

Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 will premiere on Thursday, September 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
