When Grey's Anatomy Season 9 returns tonight, Derek (Patrick Dempsey) will be a changed man. As we know, in the Season 8 finale (Season 8, Episode 24, "Flight"), Derek suffered a massive injury to his hand, which could disrupt his surgical career. Now, we have more details on how Derek will adjust (or not adjust at all).

In a sneak peek from the premiere (Season 9, Episode 1: "Going, Going, Gone"), we saw Derek and Callie (Sara Ramirez) prepping for surgery. Derek insisted that he was fine to operate, and Callie looked hesitant, possibly worried that he wasn’t ready. As TVLine reports from the Season 9 set, she may be right.

“The first couple of episodes, he's trying to perform surgery, and it's not working," says Patrick, “so he has to make an adjustment. I'm anxious to see where we end up going with it." What kind of “adjustment” are we talking here? Is it just a mental adjustment, where Derek has to suck it up and become more behind-the-scenes in neuro? Or will he try to create some surgical enhancement for his hand?

Sara added, “[Callie] absolutely puts pressure on herself [to repair Derek's hand]." Callie will start to focus her energy on fixing Derek, because “That’s kind of who she is. I think that she probably has some fear around what all the possibilities are. And how involved to get. And that ultimately comes back to her own belief in herself, or lack thereof.”

Hmm... Does this mean that Callie is doing everything in her power to avoid thinking about and dealing with Arizona’s (Jessica Capshaw) fate? We’ll have to wait and see!

Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 will premiere on Thursday, September 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
