Grey's Anatomy Season 9 is already rife with loss. Mark (Eric Dane) died, Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) lost her leg, Seattle Grace-Mercy West lost Cristina (Sandra Oh) (at least for now), and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) lost his ability to operate.

In the grand scheme of how screwed people were by the crash, Derek actually came out okay. But for one of the top surgeons in the country, being forced out of the OR is no small setback.

Will he ever get his skills back? TV Guide spoke to Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) about the fraught subject.

"I don't know if his hand ever will be fully recovered," Ellen confessed, which is a bit worrying. "I don't know if he's ever going to do surgery again, or if it's just sort of like, he can't do surgery right now, I'm not really sure."

We do know what Derek will do in the meantime: teach! Owen (Kevin McKidd) will apparently help him embrace that side of his career, and, coincidently, Kevin McKidd is the one who ushered Derek into the classroom, as the director of Season 9, Episode 4: "I Saw Her Standing There," which, according to TV Guide, is the episode where Derek turns to teaching.

TV Guide also has a few sneak peek photos of Derek in the classroom, which you can see here.
