With Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) and Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) relationship at an all-time high — he’s back in the OR doing his thing, she conquered her fear of flying — it seems like nothing could go wrong for the better-than-ever couple.

But in this week’s Grey's Anatomy promo, it looks like Mer and Der may be facing some complications with their pregnancy, begging the question: What’s going to happen to McBaby?

Before we all start freaking out, show creator Shonda Rhimes has been called in to allay any sense of impending doom, pointing out to TVGuide.com that she actually does not have a hand in the creation of the promos. “I would like to point out that while I find promos to be awesome... I have nothing to do with the way the promos are cut, so I do not make the promos," Shonda Rimes tells the publication. “The reason you all fear that I'm going to kill McBaby is because you guys think I kill everybody, even though I don't. I only kill some characters as necessary on a story basis."

But Shonda also insists that our fears about McBaby can actually be considered a good thing to a show’s creator — after all, that must mean we’re identifying with Meredith in some dark and twisty way! “What's good about the fact that everyone is so nervous is you're taking on Meredith's fear," she tells TVGuide.com. "Meredith has this impending sense of doom because it was so hard for her to get pregnant because she never should've gotten pregnant in the first place. She's the girl who survived a drowning, a hospital shooting and a plane crash.”

All in all, Shonda wouldn’t give up too much, although she did reveal that it’s “hard” for Meredith to accept that such a good thing might actually happen to her. “This is going to be a very interesting journey to watch her go on, which I'm really enjoying,” she says. We are too, Shonda — as long as we get to see that cute little McBaby by the end of this season!
