In terms of Grey's Anatomy relationships, Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Cristina (Sandra Oh) have one of the most fraught. But Shonda Rhimes reveals in a new interview that the couple has a bumpy, but ultimately positive, road ahead.

Throughout Season 8, we watched as the newly married couple went through the experience of Cristina’s abortion together, fought over their fundamentally different beliefs about having children, and eventually, Cristina decided to leave Owen behind in Seattle as she pursued her independence and new career without him.

But in Season 9, Shonda has an ambitious plan for the passionate pair. “Initially, it’s going to be very unsettling,” Shonda tells TVLine. “And then it’s going to get fairly romantic as we watch them find their way back to one another.”

So Owen and Cristina will make their marriage work! Well, as usual on Grey’s Anatomy, matters of the heart are rarely that simple.

“There’s still his cheating. Also, he still wants a family and she still doesn’t,” Shonda continues. “That is a huge obstacle for a couple. I’d like to explore what happens when two people want fundamentally different things. I didn’t want them to just walk away from each other.”

It sounds like Shonda wants to explore the reality of imperfect marriages, rather than the fairy tale version we so often expect on TV. While MerDer may be a McDreamy couple who built their own dream house, and wound up with their dream daughter Zola, Owen and Cristina can represent the more authentic story of a mismatched couple who wants to make it work.

We can’t wait!

Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 will premiere on Thursday, September 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
