We learned on the last episode of Grey's Anatomy (Season 9, Episode 8: “Love Turns You Upside Down”) that Derek’s (Patrick Dempsey) sister Liz (Neve Campbell) had agreed to donate part of her nerve tissue to Derek, which would improve his hand’s chances for recovery greatly. But what exactly will that entail?

As we can see from the sneak peek photo above, that means that Liz will become a patient at Seattle Grace-Mercy West. The photo is from Season 9, Episode 9: “Run, Baby, Run" (airing December 13), and it looks as though Liz is happy to be doing this service for her brother.

But will things really go so smoothly? In her brief introduction last week, Liz seemed peeved that she hadn’t been invited to meet Zola yet. And Derek made it clear that he didn’t want any of his sisters involved in his life. Surely there must be some deep, painful rift between Liz and Derek, which we hope comes up in the winter finale.

Of course, this is Grey’s, and we wouldn’t be shocked if Liz wound up going into a coma or (gasp!) coming close to death during the operation. Fingers crossed she makes it through!
