Grey's Anatomy fans have had to watch a lot of painful moments between Calzona in Season 9. Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) is going through a depression right now after losing her leg in the life-changing plane crash, and Callie (Sara Ramirez) is still struggling to connect with her damaged wife at home.
Sara Ramirez recently opened up about what Calzona fans can expect in the coming episodes — and, amazingly, it’s not all bad!

Sara explains Callie’s mindset moving forward to Hollywood.com, saying, “Basically she’s just in survival mode in her personal life and in her professional life.” Sara says that Callie’s main focus at work will be Derek’s (Patrick Dempsey) hand surgery, which she designed herself. Callie will keep herself busy “helping with all that nerve damage that he experienced from the crash … trying to make herself useful at the hospital.”
As for her marriage, don’t expect any grand romantic gestures anytime soon. “Given that her wife is just getting back up on her feet — or foot as it were — Callie is sort of just trying not to make anything worse,” Sara says.
Not to worry, however. Maybe it’s the overjoyed newlywed in her, but Sara sees a silver lining in the Calzona story. She explains as follows.
What I kind of love is that a couple seasons ago, Arizona was there for Callie when Callie was going through [a lot] — you know, she almost died and lost her baby. So what’s really great this season was seeing how, in a sense, the roles have been reversed and Arizona is now going through something medical and that is very, very scary and upsetting and Callie is now having to be strong and be the rock and very forgiving. So we’ll see how that plays out.
Sounds to us like this is the stuff that solid, “in sickness and in health” marriages are made of. Thanks to Sara, we can keep our hopes alive.
