Taking the journey from being best friends to being more than friends is never easy, just ask Grey's Anatomy’s Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April (Sarah Drew). And it doesn’t look like it’s going to get any easier in Season 9.

In the Season 9 premiere (Season 9, Episode 1: "Going, Going, Gone"), we saw Owen (Kevin McKidd) go and retrieve April from her family’s pig farm. And in Episode 2 (Season 9, Episode 2: “Remember the Time”), we saw how she left Seattle in the first place. After telling a very busy Jackson that she was leaving, he asked her to meet him at Joe’s bar before her flight. Needless to say, she didn’t make it there.

So can we expect a happy reunion when she returns? Not exactly.

TVLine recently spoke to Sarah about April’s first day back at Seattle Grace-Mercy West. “She doesn’t realize that Jackson’s going to be there, because he was supposed to go to Tulane. But he is there, and that is going to throw a wrench into her plans.” So what exactly were her plans? Regardless, we’d bet that a wedding proposal will throw a wrench in anyone’s plans.

Sarah also talked about April’s departure: “She sort of stood him up. She had to get on a plane, and he didn’t have time for her. So she went on with her life and thought she wouldn’t ever see him again, and then she walks into the hospital and there he is. It’s a funny entrance back into the world!”

We will have to see if “funny” is the right way to describe it. Based on the episode preview (Season 9, Episode 3: “Love the One You’re With,” airing October 18), we might have to go with … passionate.

Are you excited for their reunion? And what do you expect from the first time they lay eyes on each other?

Catch the next new episode of Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday, October 18 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
