Derek (Patrick Dempsey) and Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) have been Grey's Anatomy’s core couple from the beginning, and we all know they’ve been through their share of drama between wives, bombs, vets, drownings, nurses named Rose and so on. But in Season 9, it looks like the couple will get to focus on their careers … and their sex life.

We know that Derek and Meredith are finally going to get to move into the dream house (with a gorgeous view), but what else does Season 9 have in store for the powerhouse couple?

TVLine reports that the post-plane crash fate of Derek and Meredith will remain less dramatic than most. “There are heavier storylines in other places so [the writers] have to create a delicate balance between the heavy storylines and the light storylines. And I think Derek and Meredith are just dealing a little bit with his hand and whether he can do surgery or not, and what does that look like? But there’s not too much drama surrounding them because, the truth is, they’re happy to be alive and be parents for their daughter. So we can play the lightness and leave the heavy stuff to other people,” Ellen said.

Shew. We’re glad to hear that the couple can finally relax a bit. However, don’t mistake a lack of drama for a lack of steaminess. Creator Shonda Rhimes has mentioned that with a dream house might come a more active sex life.

Patrick’s response? “I need to go to the gym more. I hope so. They’ve been fighting enough over the last eight years. I don’t know how they stayed together… We’ll see how much sex they’re having. They should have it at least once a day. But I think the baby gets in the way.”

Are you excited for a drama-free, sex-filled future for Mer and Der? And do you agree with Patrick: Should the busy parents try and find some alone time at least once a day?

Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 will premiere on Thursday, September 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
