As most Grey's Anatomy fans are painfully aware, the original cast's contracts are up at the end of the season, and there's still no word on how contract renewal negotiations are going. Many fans also know that Shonda Rhimes wrote the Season 8 finale so that it will work whether or not the originals stay on.
How'd she manage that, you ask? Thanks to TVLine, we now have an idea.

TVLine confirms that there's still no word on the contract negotiations, and then went on to explain that they do know that "a late April episode will follow Alex Karev [Justin Chambers], Meredith Grey [Ellen Pompeo], Jackson Avery [Jesse Williams], April Kepner [Sarah Drew] and Cristina Yang [Sandra Oh] as they interview for fellowship positions at other hospitals around the country."
That makes sense, of course — as much as we love the residents, none of them are guaranteed fellowships at Seattle Grace-Mercy West, and having some of the originals go off to other hospitals would be a good way to wrap up their stories if they do leave. Is that what's going to happen?
TVLine adds that "said hospitals are apparently wooing the quintet in anticipation of them passing their boards — and they’re wisely entertaining all of their options." We wouldn't be surprised if the season ended with some of the originals getting great offers from other hospitals. That way, Season 9 could pick up with the characters either accepting those other offers or sticking around Seattle Grace-Mercy West, depending on what the actors decide to do.
We hope they all stay, but if they have to leave, we'd love our beloved originals to head off to promising futures elsewhere.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
