Shonda Rhimes still has no idea whether or not her Grey’s Anatomy key players will be back for Season 9, but that hasn’t stopped her from writing the Season 8 Finale.

In a new interview with TV Line, Shonda reveals that she took a big risk by “figur[ing] out a way to make it work REGARDLESS of what is happening [off screen].” Shonda explains, ”We have all these moveable pieces of who’s coming back and who’s not, and finally I just decided to focus on what was going to be best creatively for the show.”

She is referring, of course, to four of her original Grey’s stars — Patrick Dempsey (Derek Shepherd), Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey), Sandra Oh (Cristina Yang), and Justin Chambers (Alex Karev) — all of whom are still negotiating their contracts with ABC, and are not guaranteed to return for another season. Shonda says, “I was very nervous at the beginning of the season because I never started a season not knowing how it was going to end.”

We always trust Shonda’s judgment when it comes to her baby, but we have to wonder if the finale will suffer from a lack of cliffhanging story lines we love to hate so much. As Shonda shared in another interview recently, Meredith and Derek (and now, presumably, Zola) will complete their dream house by the end of Season 8. Will that be...it? Happily ever after doesn’t quite fit our beloved “dark and twisty” Meredith Grey.

But at least Shonda feels good about it. We’re going to handle this news by focusing only on the next episode of Grey’s each week, since, just like Shonda regarding contract negotiations, we have no control over some things.

Catch the next episode of Grey’s Anatomy on Thursday, January 12 at 9pm ET/PT on ABC.
