According to RadarOnline, Grey's Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo’s (Meredith Grey) father passed away on Saturday, September 1.

Joseph E. Pompeo lived in Massachusetts, where Ellen was born and raised. He will be survived by Ellen’s stepmother and Ellen’s five siblings. Joseph’s funeral service was reportedly held today, September 7.

Ellen has always struck us as a strong woman, maybe because her character on Grey’s is so resilient. We wish nothing but the best for her and her family.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 will premiere on Thursday, September 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
