full size Arizona on Grey's Anatomy Season 8, Episode 18

Last time we saw Arizona Robbins, luck was not on her side. After the horrific plane accident in Grey’s Anatomy’s Season 8 finale, she looked like she might lose a leg, or worse — not survive the crash.

Although show creator Shonda Rhimes has remained tight-lipped about Arizona’s fate, Wetpaint Entertainment was able to coax a few thoughts and theories out of portrayer Jessica Capshaw at SELF Magazine’s 5th Annual Women Doing Good Awards on Sept. 12 in New York City.

Wetpaint Entertainment: Last we left Arizona, she was not in good shape. I know you can’t share details about her fate, but is there anything you can say to reassure the fans?

Jessica Capshaw: I cannot say anything about her fate. No, I can’t! She was in bad shape. She’s in bad, bad, bad, bad shape! It’s bad for her. Things are bad, bad, bad, bad. No, it’s very … you know, I think there’s a big question mark. At the end of the season, there were a lot of question marks around a lot of things, and there were obviously some really tragic losses. And I think the season picks up — I think — with all of those question marks still in the air and all of those tragic losses still being processed. And I don’t really know what’s going to end up with her!

Well, there’s a few things that aren’t question marks: Grey’s has three big departures coming up. Chyler’s gone, Eric is departing, and Kim left, too. How do you feel about the departures, especially Eric, whom you worked so closely with?

I think that, honestly, I just had a baby! So I feel like what is happening on Grey’s Anatomy is not … I don’t really know much about it! Because I just had a baby, so I’ve been home! But I think as a viewer, I will very much miss all of those characters. As a fan of the show, I will very much miss Lexie Grey, I will very much miss Mark Sloane, and I will very much miss Teddy Altman.

But, you know, the show won’t be the same without them, and yet all shows have to move on and progress, and so I think it’s just, as I said, a lot of question marks!

For Callie, since Mark was such a big part of her life, how will his departure affect her?

I mean, again, as a viewer, he’s the father of her baby! I think they had a crazy strong binary relationship and obviously went through a lot, so I don’t know! I think it’s going to be very interesting!

What about Baby Sophia?!

Oh, Baby Sophia without a dad! I know!
