Grey’s Anatomy is famous for its heart stopping, totally shocking, almost unbelievable season finales. Character deaths, plane crashes, shootings — nothing is off limits for the Grey’s writers. With the Season 9 finale coming tonight (May 16), we've been thinking about the crazy endings of seasons past. The superstorm seems like bad news, but it can't be as traumatic as some of these ... right?
Here are our top five favorite Grey’s Anatomy season finales of all time:
Season 2, “Losing My Religion.” During the Season 2 finale, we were totally heartbroken when Denny died. We’ll never forget the scene where Izzie (Katherine Heigl) lies down next to his body and cries in her dress for the prom the hospital is throwing — a scene that later became iconic for Grey’s.
Season 4, “Freedom.” This episode was the rare Grey’s finale that actually wrapped up just the way we hoped — a nice break from the usual death and destruction we’ve come to expect. And best of all, Meredith and Derek are successful in their clinical trial and are happily-ever-back-together.
Season 5, “Now or Never.” After wondering whether or not she'd have to live the rest of her days as a "turnip," Izzie and Alex's fears are eased when Derek sucessfully removes her brain tumor. Yay! But the good news ends there. Cue one of the saddest moments in Grey’s Anatomy history — when we discover that the mystery patient who has been hit by a bus is actually George. Oh, and then George and Izzie flatline at the same time, but only one of them makes it out alive.
Season 6 “Sanctuary”/”Death and All His Friends.” When there’s a shooter loose in the hospital, no one is safe — especially not Derek, who is the shooter's intended target. When he gets shot, Cristina has to operate on him while the shooter is still roaming the hospital, Meredith has to operate on Owen, and Mark and Lexie have to try to save Alex. Not to mention Bailey stars in one of the most heartbreaking scenes the series has ever produced. This two-part finale kept us on the edge of our seats for the entire two hours.
Season 8 “Flight.” Last year, catastrophic plane crash that put several of our favorite doctors’ lives in danger left us in complete disbelief. Only seconds after Mark and Lexie finally confessed they still loved each other, Lexie dies — how unfair was that? We still get teary just thinking about it. Not knowing who else might die kept us in suspense all summer long.
