Grey's Anatomy

Okay, after eight seasons of Grey's Anatomy and counting, we're wondering: is Seattle just the unluckiest city in the world or what? Did every resident open an umbrella indoors or walk under a ladder or cross a black cat's path or something? Because otherwise, how could so many terrible events happen in this hapless metropolis? In case you don't believe us or your memory is foggier than Puget Sound, let's rehash.

Train crash
In Season 2, Episode 6, aptly titled "Into You Like a Train," the M.A.G.I.C. crew's night of drinking was rudely interrupted by a train derailment injuring hundreds of passengers — including Bonnie and Tom, two strangers impaled on the same pole. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) was bereft when the doctors chose to sacrifice Bonnie to save Tom, especially because she felt abandoned herself after Derek (Patrick Dempsey) stood her up at Joe's bar. Meredith, girl, we know you were hurtin', but at least all of your limbs and appendages are intact.

Ferry crash
What happens when a container ship meets a ferry in the fog? They certainly don't fall in love — we can tell you that! This tragedy, introduced in Season 3, Episode 15: "Walk on Water," marked the interns' first run-in with a mass trauma in the field. And it was gnar-to-the-ly. Izzie had to drill into a man's skull, Meredith was knocked into the water by a spastic patient, and Alex (Justin Chambers) met a certain pregnant Jane Doe trapped under a pylon. (Okay, at least one love story emerged from this incident!)

Roof collapse
Cupid's attention must have been elsewhere in Season 6, Episode 14: "Valentine's Day Massacre," because the roof collapsed at a popular restaurant with the unfortunate name of Grandinetti's, ruining the dates of dozens of couples. It was dire, but one surgical silver lining is that the docs got to reattach a patient's arm after keeping it viable by putting it on his leg. Now that's a sweet Valentine's treat.

Mass shooting
Do we even need to elaborate? It's impossible to forget the two part sixth-season finale, "Sanctuary" and "Death and All His Friends," in which bereaved widower Gary Clark returned to Seattle Grace Mercy West with a vengeance. He meant to kill Derek, Lexie (Chyler Leigh), and Richard (James Pickens Jr.) but ended up shooting anyone who posed an obstacle. In all, eighteen people were shot and eleven of those victims died, but hardly anyone escaped some sort of emotional trauma.

Plane crash
When you think "plane crash," you think "climactic," too, right? Yeah, so did our Seattle Grace Mercy West peeps. In the seventh-season finale, "Unaccompanied Minor," they were braced for the worst: hundreds of casualties. But then, nothing happened. It was oddly quiet. That's because only one passenger survived: a little girl. So the most anticlimactic disaster on this list is probably the most tragic. But, touchingly, the victims' loved ones stuck around to wait for the girl's family to arrive at the hospital.

Sinkhole
Hardly anything could be scarier than to have the earth open beneath your feet and swallow you in an instant. Seriously, we're having nightmares about that scenario! But that's exactly what happened in Season 8, Episode 1: "Free Falling." Cars, buildings, and, of course, human beings, all disappeared into the sudden chasm. Luckily for the victims, surgical superstars Owen (Kevin McKidd) and Callie (Sara Ramirez) were on the scene within minutes.

Alright, you Seattleites, speak up. We hear the Pacific Northwest is beautiful, but Grey's has us reconsidering our travel plans. Is Seattle really so accident-prone, or is its rainy disposition the biggest of your city's problems? Please reassure us in the comments section below.
