Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) is close to making a decision about the next Chief Resident, and everyone is pulling out the stops (and acting a bit recklessly) to impress him!

For example, Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) steals a patient from under Teddy Altman (Kim Raver)'s nose and realizes that the dude's respiratory problems result from the tree growing inside his lung. (No joke!) But April Kepner (Sarah Drew) rats Cristina out, and Owen is mad at her. He tells her that she'll never be Chief Resident because she'll hate the non-surgical duties. She resents him at first but sees the light and forgives him (and even offers sex!). As for the patient, he insists that Cristina do the surgery since she took such an interest in him, and the surgery goes flawlessly.

Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), Miranda Bailey (Chanda Wilson), Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw), and Lucy operate on an African woman they didn't even realize was pregnant — let alone 32 weeks pregnant — because the baby is so small. Once they open her up, they see that the baby has survived all this time outside of the uterus and entangled in the woman's intestines. Thanks to their quick thinking and hard work, both mother and child survive.

Lucy tells Alex that she's being courted for a job in Texas but isn't sure whether to go because of other "factors" (meaning, uh, him). But when Arizona encourages Alex to fill the position she vacated in Africa, Alex seriously considers it without even thinking of Lucy. By the time he comes around and realizes he wants to stay, Lucy has already taken that job. So much for Karev's big happy ending, huh?

April's ploy for becoming Chief Resident is developing checklists to organize case files. Owen is duly impressed but Cristina scoffs at April's efforts until April gives an impassioned speech about how protocol prevents mistakes and saves lives.

Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) is back at work, meaning Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) is on Daddy Day Care duty. Seeing him with a bjorn is almost too much for Lexie to bear, but she denies these feelings and sticks by Jackson's side.

Speaking of Mr. Avery, he abruptly quits the diabetes trail, disappointing both Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) and Owen. But then Owen realizes that he's doing it because the trial is up for the Harper Avery Award, and Jackson doesn't want to jeopardize the Chief's chances. (Good dude. Good dude.)

Henry meets Perkins and realizes how serious Teddy is about him. He asks Richard to be a patient in the diabetes trial so that he can get better, get a job, and get his own medical insurance; Richard agrees. By the time Teddy tells him that she has agreed to go to Germany with Perkins, Henry is set up with a new pancreas, which got him a new job, and he asks her for a divorce.

Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) not only has an interview with Owen but one with the social worker, too; and it's the latter that has her sweating. She feels like she's saying all the wrong things, but the social worker sees that Meredith is proud of Zola's medical progress and deduces that she has the makings of a good mom.

Cristina and Alex drown their Chief Resident disappointment at Joe's bar, and Cristina tells him that she's sure Meredith will get the job. When Owen finds them there, Alex drunkenly tells him that Mer meddled with the Alzheimer's trial. The bleep is hittin' the fan now, ladies and gents! We'll see how this all pans out in next week's season finale.
