After six years on the air, Private Practice will end its run on ABC.

Creator Shonda Rhimes tweeted and blogged about the sad news, saying, “There was a lot of discussion and debate, but in the end, the guys at the network and the studio and I all decided that Private Practice was reaching its finish line.”

The popular Grey’s Anatomy spin-off starred Kate Walsh as Addison Montgomery, who left Seattle Grace Hospital to start her own practice in Los Angeles. Kate announced her departure from the show back in June, and it was undetermined whether the show would go on without its star.

Shonda added, “It’s heartbreaking to end. Truly...It’s rare for a show to go for more than 100 episodes and we are incredibly proud to have been such a show. And we're grateful to all of you for spending time with us for an hour every week for the last 6 years. It's meant the world.”

But don’t worry, the busy writer/producer has her hands full with several projects already. In addition to launching the new show Scandal earlier this year, Shonda recently sold two new comedies called I Hate L.A. Dudes and The Mix.
