It's the question on everyone's mind: What happened to Mark Sloan (Eric Dane) after the plane crash in Season 8, Episode 24, "Flight"? And now that the episode has started airing, we know: He's in a coma.

And not just that: He has a living will that makes it very clear that if, after a certain amount of time, he hasn't shown any change, he wants to be taken off of life support. The episode — shocker! — picks up on that final day, with the other docs preparing to say goodbye. Flashbacks (and sniffles) galore.

Finally, in an emotional scene, the doctors take him off of his life sustaining meds, and he is left to slowly die while his friends mourn him.

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.
