What's Treacher Collins Syndrome as Seen on Grey's Anatomy?
Luckily for us medically-ignorant laypeople, this episode of Grey's wasn't too heavy on lingo, but here are a couple of medical terms mentioned on the show that are worth expounding upon.
Arizona and Mark treated a girl named Sarah who had Treacher Collins Syndrome, a hereditary condition which causes facial defects. In Sarah's case, her cheekbones never grew, but other symptoms could include disfigured ears, a small jaw, a wide mouth, a cleft palate, lower eyelid defects, and scalp hair that extends to the cheeks.
When removing a tumor on Henry's adrenal gland, Richard found a necrotic cyst on the pancreas. The pancreas secretes digestive fluids into the small intestine and the hormones insulin and glucagon into the bloodstream. (This is why removing part of the pancreas could make Henry dependent on insulin.) A necrotic cyst is a sac filled with the liquid of dead tissue.
