There’s no question that Grey's Anatomy wouldn’t have become such a cultural phenomenon if it weren’t for super showrunner Shonda Rhimes, but does that mean that you would ditch the show if she left?

Showrunners leaving the shows that they helped launch isn’t an uncommon occurance. In the past year, the showrunners for Smash, Walking Dead, The Office, and Community have all left their shows, whether by their own choice or because they were forced out by higher-ups. However, TV Guide points out that showrunners have become the new rockstars amongst TV fans due to the incresingly public profiles of people like Shonda and Community’s Dan Harmon, making their deaprtures particularly hard for fans. With Harmon leaving Community, some hardcore fans have taken to Twitter to declare that they will no longer watch the show. Who knew a showrunner would have so much influence amongst fans?

Shonda’s brand of melodrama may not win over some TV snobs, but it has made her one of the most powerful women in Hollywood. Her shows have a signature style that fans can immediately get into. When you’re watching a Shondaland show, from Scandal to Private Practice, you know that it is going to have that special Shonda touch.

So, we have to ask: Would you still watch Grey’s if Shonda left the show? Remember, this is all hypothetical! We just want to know how important Shonda is to your viewing experience. Vote in our poll below and tell us your thoughts in the comments!

Miss Grey’s? Us too. Luckily the show will return to Thursdays at 9 p.m. with all-new episodes in the fall on ABC.
